ABOUT THE LIONS
The Lions (a non-profit corp.), a Minor League Football team formed in
1978, is one of the oldest existing football clubs in the Midwest. The
Lions spent their first 16 years of existence in the now defunct
Northern Ohio Football League (NOFL). While in the NOFL they won eight
(8) league titles and four (4) state titles.
In 1994, the commitment was made to upgrade the level of competition and
the Lions entered the Mid-Continental Football League, which features
some of the top-rated teams in the country and is widely considered the
premier Minor Football League in North America. The Lions played for the
MCFL championship in 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2003, winning it outright in
2002. With a combined overall record of 209-79 and a winning percentage
of .725 it is easy to see why the Cleveland Lions set the standard that
other minor league teams in Ohio strive to reach.
MINOR PROFESSIONALS - THE PLAYERS
We call our athletes minor professionals. All athletes participating
with the Lions are unpaid amateurs who help subsidize the team by
raising their own support. Players come from all over Northern
Ohio-Cleveland, Lorain, Elyria, Akron, Canton, Mentor, Willoughby, North
Ridgeville and Medina to name but a few. Players can be and are
regularly scouted by Colleges and professional Football Clubs. In fact,
one of our outstanding offensive tackles Alan Barnett was signed by the
Miami Dolphins in 1999 and has spent time in several NFL camps. We have
also had numerous other players move into the professional ranks in our
25 year history.
WE NEED YOU
A 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the Cleveland Lions club is
community driven and dedicated to giving back. We support such endeavors
as the Ohio Association of Police Athletic Leagues, St. Ignatius of
Antioch Parish Athletic Association, the Rocky River Education
Foundation, the Ohio Junior Hockey Association, the Cleveland Muni
Basketball Association, and many others.
We are always looking for good people to participate in this exciting
program. If you are interested in finding out more about our sponsorship
opportunities or volunteering, please call us at 216-741-2483. |
